Yes. SmartFiles processes all image resizing locally in your browser. Your photos and images are never uploaded to a server, ensuring that your private files remain secure on your own device.

No. Our tool works entirely within your web browser. There is no software to install and no extensions required to resize your images.

No. Since the resizing happens directly in your browser's memory, we have no access to your data, and we do not store, view, or analyze your files.

We utilize efficient WebAssembly modules to handle image processing. This turns your browser into a local, powerful desktop-like application that resizes your images without needing an internet connection.

SmartFiles is completely free, with no accounts, sign-ups, or subscriptions required. You can resize your images as often as needed.

Yes. Our tool provides a 'maintain aspect ratio' option, allowing you to easily adjust dimensions without distorting or stretching your image.

Our tool supports most common image formats, including JPG, PNG, and WEBP, making it easy to resize images for web use, social media, or documents.

Yes. Since SmartFiles runs in your web browser, you can resize images on your iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or any desktop computer without needing to install an app.

In almost every case, yes, and being clear about which of the two you need is most of the task. With the ratio locked, setting one dimension calculates the other so the image scales evenly and nothing is distorted, which is what you want nearly always. With it unlocked you can set both values independently, which is correct only when you genuinely intend to stretch or squash the image, and which will look wrong on anything containing text, faces or straight lines. The aspect ratio is preserved by default, and distortion is immediately obvious when it is not.

Because there is no more detail in the file than there was to begin with, so the software has to estimate what belongs in the new pixels and the result is inevitably softer than a genuine photograph taken at that size. Shrinking is the opposite and far more forgiving: the software is discarding pixels the eye was never going to resolve at the new size, which is why reducing a large photo to a web-sized one often looks better rather than worse.

Resize in stages rather than in one large jump, because each pass smooths out the interpolation artefacts introduced by the previous one. Going up to a power-of-two multiple such as doubling is also more reliable than an arbitrary factor. It matters most for images containing text and for hard diagonal edges, where a single large jump produces visible blur and a stepped approach does not. Even so, accept that a very large enlargement will always look soft, and that the honest answer to needing a bigger image is often to find a higher-resolution source rather than to scale up what you have.

The largest size it will actually be displayed at, rather than anything larger. A 4000-pixel-wide banner displayed at 1200 pixels wide wastes most of its data on detail nobody will ever see, and resizing to the size it is really seen at is usually a bigger win than any amount of compression. When resizing a set of images that will appear together, resizing them all to the same height or width is what makes them line up visually.

No. Resizing changes the pixel dimensions and nothing else, so it does not improve sharpness, correct a photograph that was slightly out of focus, or repair one taken in poor light. It cannot add detail that was not captured, and enlarging a small image past a modest factor will always look soft, because the missing information does not exist to be recovered. Fixing the source image is a separate job.

They work best in combination. A large image resized to a sensible size will shrink a great deal, but compressing it afterwards shrinks it further, and the two operations together usually achieve more than either alone. Compression alone leaves the file large because the pixel count is unchanged, and an extreme resize alone can leave visible artefacts, so doing both sensibly gives the smallest file that still looks right.

The full-resolution original is never modified, so you keep it to return to at any point. Metadata such as camera details and capture location is not carried into the resized file, which is usually welcome, and the aspect ratio is preserved unless you explicitly unlock it. That makes it safe to try a target size, compare the result against the original and confirm it is what you expected before you use it.
